I Am More Than My Skin

March 27, 2020

I was watching worship video from a mega church with its home base here in Charlotte the other morning. As the camera spanned the crowd, I noticed the different nationalities worshipping and thought how beautiful and what a representation of what heaven is. All Christians no matter the color of skin or nationality of our forefathers will be in one place, shoulder to shoulder worshiping the King, the Waymaker, Miracle Worker, Promise Keeper, Light in the Darkness. I saw those that have been labeled “punk rockers”, “thugs”, “normal people” shoulder to shoulder embracing the King, worshiping Him. But here is what I really saw, God’s children loving Him, worshiping Him, exalting Him, embracing Him.

Where are we Christians?  While beautiful, this cannot be the only representation of who God is or better, who the church is. To take the phase of a well-respected organization out in California, “What If” all of us took the time to look past skin color, nationality and see the human inside who loves God like we do? What if we truly looked past skin color and stopped dividing our churches each Sunday morning?  What if we stopped making comments about black people or white people?  What if?  What if? What if?

I am thankful for the life I’ve lived and experiences I’ve had. Those that have opened my eyes that we are all the same. Dr. King talked of one day white and blacks being together. Are we there yet?

People talk about these millennials, but they have this wonderful ability to see people as humans and not define them by the color of their skin. It’s us, the older ones who are charged with guiding the younger ones, that are holding onto the old ways and traditions of division.  If we cannot see past skin, then how do we expect to get into heaven? God doesn’t see skin. He sees His children, His spirit. It doesn’t matter where you are from nor where you worship if you haven’t accepted the True and Living God. Have you accepted the Son, Jesus who died and shed His blood so that you could live? Have you forgiven yourself? Have you??? Have you???  Maybe just maybe we are spending so much time looking at others because we are afraid to look at ourselves. The best time in my life has been spent with myself. I’ve learned my voice. I’ve found the inner girl - her hurts, her joys, her love of self.

Take time to look at yourself. Maybe you are in the home for the next 2 weeks. Good!!! Take time to fast and pray. Ask God what He wants of you next. Grow your bond with God. Plant your seed by the river of water of life (Rev. 22:1)
